A world-renowned facility for children with severe brain disorders, Kennedy Krieger’s facility includes a 1/2 acre garden. Mahan Rykiel Associates provided concept and design development services for this new 250-bed hospital built on 11 acres of County-owned land in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. This new facility replaces a century-old building with a state of the art hospital for the state’s most vulnerable patients.
Reflecting Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to wellness and environmental responsibility, Mahan Rykiel prepared landscape plans for two medical office buildings in Maryland with a focus on the experience of patients, staff and visitors.
The $168-million, 640,000-square-foot facility opened in 2016. The pavilion houses 72 exam rooms; a surgical area with two operating rooms and two procedure rooms; areas for diagnostic testing, imaging and laboratory services, as well as family amenities, retail space and faculty offices. Construction also included an attached parking garage with more than 600 spaces.
Located adjacent to the Acute Care Pavilion, the Restorative Garden provides a peaceful and soothing environment for hospital visitors, patients, and staff. Organized along a meandering path of bluestone paving, the Restorative Garden design fosters inward reflection and respite.
Established in 1962, the Virginia Treatment Center for Children (VTCC) is the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Program of the Department of Psychiatry at VCU Medical Center. VTCC provides inpatient acute care crisis stabilization and a full spectrum of outpatient mental health services for children and adolescents ages 3 through 17.
Mahan Rykiel Associates provided complete landscape architectural services for the expansion at the University of Maryland Medical System including a rooftop garden, interior landscape design and streetscape. The project design includes extensive interior open space with skylights, planting and seating areas. Interior planting includes shade trees, seating, and a fountain.
