Established in 1962, the Virginia Treatment Center for Children (VTCC) is the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Program of the Department of Psychiatry at VCU Medical Center. VTCC provides inpatient acute care crisis stabilization and a full spectrum of outpatient mental health services for children and adolescents ages 3 through 17.
Mahan Rykiel was tasked with creating outdoor “rooms” used for therapy, play, and or for private meditation. The concept makes the connection between the flight of the butterfly and the healing process; understanding that the healing process is never linear. The rhythm and playfulness of the design draws visitors and children into the courtyards where the symbolism continues through plantings and “play” sculpture. The design helps to complete the metaphor by creating a sense of familiarity, security, and fascination.
