Mahan Rykiel Associates provided complete landscape architectural services for the expansion at the University of Maryland Medical System including a rooftop garden, interior landscape design and streetscape. The project design includes extensive interior open space with skylights, planting and seating areas. Interior planting includes shade trees, seating, and a fountain.

The area is intended to provide a calm, waiting area for family and friends of patients in surgery. The design emphasizes privacy by creating small seating areas separated by plantings. An upper level garden is for the exclusive use of patients and staff. This garden has low planting and seating. The design emphasizes privacy by creating small seating areas separated by plantings. The entry and streetscape design reflects the Master Plan for the University Center area. This includes special paving, street tree planting, and low planting where space allows.
