Sarah P. Duke Gardens is a premier public garden fostering an appreciation of the natural world, environmental awareness and sustainable practices. It is an indispensable and lasting feature at Duke University, accessible to all, providing outreach and respite to the local community and visitors from around the world.
Mahan Rykiel was tasked with creating a Schematic Design for a new authentic Chinese Garden adjacent to the Japanese Garden. MRA worked to create a garden that illustrates the Chinese philosophical approach to life and the importance of social network. As the country is very large, there are many different approaches often defined by geography. MRA worked to integrate aspects of both Northern and Southern Chinese Gardens into one seamless design. The garden ties into the existing Japanese Garden and encompasses 2.5 acres. The project is awaiting fundraising.
