HIGHWAYS

Balance

Our highways are the backbones and links to our communities. The miles that they stretch comprise many facets of Landscape Architecture, from planting design, to managing stormwater runoff, and from environmental compliance to hardscape design features. Each project is different, with a defined set of values important to its own. This balancing act is tempered by the details in the design, with safety for the project’s users and reduced maintenance being at the top of the list.

Function

The function of a highway corridor is less personal than a Main Street and shared on a much greater scale, either routinely by commuters, or by traveling motorist just driving through without ever stopping. Plantings need to be designed in bolder and longer masses so that they are not overlooked; Plantings define corridor edges and speak/react to the environment; bridges become gateways; and culverts become wildlife passage.

Experience

Our highways connect people and communities. They provide a means of safe travel and destiny. Through surrounding area context, we enhance this experience through careful planning and design. We focus on corridor viewsheds and vernacular of scenic and historic precedence, attempting to weave the design of the highway into the surrounding landscape fabric.
