Mahan Rykiel was engaged by the City of Hagerstown, Maryland to revitalize the streetscape design within the historic arts district and connect it to the city park via an arts and entertainment trail. The location of art, park/space concepts, amenities, and furnishings present a contemporary, playful aesthetic which serves as a wayfinding mechanism for the trail in contrast to the more historical setting.
Within the Arts District, traditional brick paving accented with granite insets and bronze plaques celebrate the district’s identity as an arts and entertainment destination. Appropriately scaled gas lamps and black metal tree grates were used to enhance the pedestrian experience… bollards and wrought iron fencing were employed to define sidewalk café zones.
Musical notes and theatrical masks imprinted into the glass-flecked street paving create a series of whimsical accent bands down the length of the street adding to the richness and special identity of the district.
High quality, urban tolerant shade trees provided the finishing touch to this distinctive, successful and pedestrian scaled streetscape.
