Gables Union Market (G.U.M.) is located in the heart of Washington DC’s Union Market District, adjacent to the historic Union Market. The area has undergone deliberate re-development while preserving its authentic character. G.U.M. features a mix of retail spaces on the ground floor, a masonry mass with light-colored brick architecture, and a floating volume clad in dark metal. Mahan Rykiel designed the various outdoor amenities both on structure and at the streetscape. Overall, the project creatively interprets the district’s mercantile heritage while providing 300 residential units, 22,700 sq ft of retail space, 279 parking spaces, and 144 bicycle spaces.
