The $168-million, 640,000-square-foot facility opened in 2016. The pavilion houses 72 exam rooms; a surgical area with two operating rooms and two procedure rooms; areas for diagnostic testing, imaging and laboratory services, as well as family amenities, retail space and faculty offices. Construction also included an attached parking garage with more than 600 spaces.
Mahan Rykiel Associates worked with the architect to design the exterior spaces including a green roof ‘sky’ terrace and streetscape amenities.
The James River, located just a short distance south of the building, served to inspire the design of the site features. The shifting patterns in the paving evoke the movement of the river’s current and the swaths of natural plantings emulate the wooded edges of its banks.
The multi-story, high-tech ambulatory pavilion for pediatric services is located between 10th and 11th Streets on East Broad Street. Meeting the growing need for outpatient services for children in the community, the Children’s Hospital is slated to be the largest, most advanced outpatient facility dedicated to children in the region. The project is seeking LEED Silver.
